Beginner FAQ

What should I wear to my first class?
For No-Gi classes, wear comfortable athletic clothing like a rash guard and shorts or leggings. For Gi classes, you will need a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu gi (kimono). If you don't have one yet, we can provide a loaner for your first class or you can purchase one at the gym. The Starter Kit also includes a free rashguard for adults or a free gi for kids.
Do I need any prior experience to start?
Absolutely not. Most of our members started with zero martial arts experience. Our fundamentals classes are designed specifically for beginners, and our coaches will guide you through every technique step by step. All you need to bring is a willingness to learn.
Will I get hurt?
Safety is our top priority. Jiu-Jitsu is a contact sport, but our training environment emphasizes controlled technique over brute force. Our coaches closely supervise all sparring, and you will never be forced to do anything you are not comfortable with. Minor soreness is normal as your body adapts, but serious injuries are rare.
How often should I train as a beginner?
We recommend starting with 2-3 classes per week. This gives your body time to recover while building consistency. As you get more comfortable, many members train 4-5 times per week. The most important thing is to be consistent. Regular training beats occasional intense sessions.
I'm not in great shape, can I still start?
Yes! You do not need to be fit to start Jiu-Jitsu. You get fit by doing Jiu-Jitsu. Our classes are scalable to all fitness levels, and you will be surprised how quickly your conditioning improves. Many of our members came in out of shape and transformed their fitness through consistent training.

Kids & Parents FAQ

What age groups are included in the Kids Program?
Our Kids Program is divided into the following age groups to ensure tailored instruction: Ages 4-6 (Little Warriors): Foundational motor skills and introductory Jiu-Jitsu techniques. Ages 7-9 (Junior Grapplers): Expanded technical skills and teamwork-focused training. Ages 10-12 (Pre-Teens): Intermediate techniques and developing strategic thinking. Ages 13-15 (Teens): Advanced techniques, competition preparation, and leadership development. Teens 16 and older are welcome to transition into our adult program.
Is Jiu-Jitsu safe for my child?
Yes. Our kids program is designed with safety as the top priority. All classes are supervised by experienced instructors who specialize in youth development. Techniques are taught in an age-appropriate manner, and sparring is closely monitored. Our mats are premium quality and our facility is climate-controlled for comfort.
Can parents watch classes?
Absolutely! Parents are welcome to watch from our viewing area during any kids class. We also offer live streaming of all kids classes through the Komba app, so you can watch from anywhere, whether you are at work, running errands, or at home.
How much does the Kids Program cost?
We offer a Kids Starter Kit for $49 that includes one month of unlimited kids classes plus a free gi. After the starter period, kids memberships are available at competitive rates. Please visit our gym or call us at (954) 900-8823 for current pricing. Kids memberships must be completed in person or over the phone.
How do I enroll my child?
If you are 16 and up you can create your own Komba account and attend Classes and Open Mat sessions for Adults. For children 15 and under, your parent needs to sign you up to our kids program. To enroll your child, please visit our gym or call us directly at (954) 900-8823. Kids memberships must be completed in person or over the phone and cannot be registered online.
What if my child doesn't like it?
We understand that not every activity is for every kid. That is why we encourage families to try a free class before committing. Most kids who are initially nervous end up loving it within a few sessions. Our coaches are skilled at making new students feel welcome and engaged.
Will Jiu-Jitsu make my child aggressive?
Quite the opposite. Jiu-Jitsu teaches discipline, respect, and self-control. Children learn to manage their emotions, resolve conflicts peacefully, and build confidence without aggression. The values learned on the mat (respect for training partners, humility, and perseverance) carry over into everyday life.

Self-Defense FAQ

Is Jiu-Jitsu effective for self-defense?
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is widely regarded as one of the most effective martial arts for real-world self-defense. It teaches you to control and neutralize opponents regardless of size or strength through leverage, technique, and positioning. Many law enforcement and military programs incorporate BJJ for exactly this reason.
How long before I can defend myself?
Within the first few months of consistent training, you will develop practical skills for common self-defense scenarios. You will learn how to manage distance, control an attacker, and escape dangerous positions. While mastery takes years, basic self-defense competence develops relatively quickly with regular practice.
Do you offer dedicated self-defense classes?
All of our Jiu-Jitsu classes incorporate self-defense principles. The techniques you learn in fundamentals and regular classes are directly applicable to real-world self-defense situations. Our curriculum covers standing self-defense, takedowns, positional control, and submissions, all of which are essential for personal safety.
