Jiu-Jitsu focuses on leverage, technique, and positioning rather than strength or size. This allows kids to neutralize threats effectively, even against larger opponents. Ranking System & Belt Promotions

How does the ranking system work at Komba?
Komba uses a customized ELO rating system that tracks your attendance and performance in sparring sessions and adjusts your rank based on wins, losses, and attendance. Your progress is visible through the Komba app.
What ELO scores correspond to each belt level?
The scores are as follows: - White Belt: 0 - 999 ELO - Blue Belt: 1000 - 1999 ELO - Purple Belt: 2000 - 2999 ELO - Brown Belt: 3000 - 3999 ELO - Black Belt: 4000 - 5000 ELO
How do I gain ELO points?
ELO point gain occurs when you attend classes, privates, mat reservations, and open mats. During matches at open mats, each match will also provide some ELO gain. Depending on various factors like belt, weight, gender, and age, you will gain some amount of points.
Can I lose my ELO points?
Generally no, you cannot lose points unless you stop attending Komba for longer than 30 days. The other exception is for Black Belts, where losses in Open Mat sessions can result in a drop in ELO - they cannot fall below the 4000 Black Belt threshold though.
How do belt promotions work?
Belt promotions occur automatically when you reach the ELO score required for the next belt level. There are no subjective decisions; your progress is based purely on your ELO score.
Do I need to attend belt promotion ceremonies?
No, promotions are immediate and based on your ELO score, so you don’t have to wait for any ceremonies to receive your new rank.
Can I get promoted if I don’t compete in open mats?
While attendance points are part of your ELO score, competing in open mats and winning matches significantly boosts your progression. Relying solely on attendance will result in slower rank advancement.
How does ELO work for Children?
Given Children under 16 are not in the adult program and do not attend Open Mats, they currently do not get ELO and the Kids Program uses a traditional belt system. Over the coming months we will advance our technology to also transition Kids to our innovative ELO system for ranking and belt promotions. Given Kids do not attend adult Open Mats, when we transition to the Kids ELO System it will be skewed towards attendance and custom kids tournaments that Komba will host for its kid members.
How does ELO work for Children?
Given Children under 16 are not in the adult program and do not attend Open Mats, their ELO is skewed towards attendance and custom kids tournaments that Komba will host for its members.
How often is my ELO score updated?
Your ELO score is updated immediately after each sparring session or class, giving you real-time feedback on your progress.
What happens if I disagree with my match outcome in Open Mat?
You can review the sparring footage available in the app and resolve any discrepancies with your opponent. If no agreement is reached, you can escalate to a Komba mediation panel.
Are there special rules for high-ranking belts?
Yes, Black Belts have stricter rules regarding ELO loss and must maintain their skill level through active participation in competitions to preserve their rank.
What if I am close to promotion but have an injury?
Your ELO score will fall some amount for each 30 days of inactivity, regardless of the reason.

Open Mats

What are Open Mats, and how do they work?
Open Mats are daily competitive sparring sessions designed to help members improve through competition. They are structured to provide a challenging, engaging environment where you can earn points and progress in your ranking.
Can I participate in Open Mats as a beginner?
Yes, Open Mats are open to all skill levels for anyone aged 16 years and older. The Komba app will do its best to match opponents according to skill and selected filters to ensure a fair and productive experience.
Do I need to book in advance to attend Open Mats?
Yes, booking in advance through the Komba app is required for your participation. If space is available, attendance is open up to 50 minutes after open mat starts.
Can I choose who I roll with?
While you can’t choose exactly who to roll with, you can set filters based on belt, gender, age, and weight and the Komba app will do its best to match you with participants within those filters. Only the gender filter is guaranteed. Over time we will continue to perfect this system and add more preferences.
Is there a penalty if I don’t show up for the Open Mat?
No there is no penalty for not showing, however if this is a constant issue your booking ability can be halted.
How is a win determined in Open Mats?
A win is determined by the number of submissions during the session. If both competitors achieve the same number of submissions or none, the match is recorded as a tie.
Who tracks wins and losses in Open Mat?
After each open mat, participants need to log their own match results in the Komba app - it’s simple, just a few taps, and you’re done. A win is determined by who had the most submissions in the match, and a tie occurs if there’s an equal number of submissions or none by either participant. If you don't submit your results within 48 hours of sparring you risk being marked as an automatic loss. The system runs on the honor principle, so integrity is key. If there is a dispute where the parties cannot agree on the outcome it can be resolved using video verification as every match is recorded, ensuring that everything stays fair. If a member is caught cheating or constantly in disputes they risk being kicked out of Komba entirely.
What if I lose in an Open Mat session?
You won’t lose ELO points (except at the Black Belt level). All participants gain points for attendance, so there’s always value in showing up and participating.
Are there prizes for Open Mat performance?
Yes, there are weekly leaderboards for attendance and most wins. The top performers receive cash prizes and other rewards.
How do the weekly Leaderboards work?
There are two weekly leaderboards: most attendance and most wins in open mat. We will track all of your attendances (classes, private lessons, mat reservations and open mats) as well as all your wins during open mat sessions. The top 3 leaders in each category will win prizes weekly.
Can I spar with specific partners in Open Mats?
While you cannot choose in advance the exact person to spar with, you can customize your sparring preferences in the app to prioritize sparring with certain members or avoid others based on weight, experience, or other factors. If there are specific members you want to spar with you can always book private mat space for free as an All Access member and invite up to 4 people (including yourself) to have a private sparring session.
Is there a limit to how many Open Mats I can attend?
For All Access members, there is no limit, and you can attend as many Open Mats as you’d like. For free Open Mat members, they can attend up to once per week. The more you participate, the greater chance you have at winning in the Leaderboards and the faster you progress with ELO.
How many Open Mats can I book at a time?
Open Mat access members are able to book 1 open mat per week. All Access members are able to book without limits at any given time.
What should I wear for Open Mats?
Komba Open Mats are primarily No-Gi (at times we may run a Gi Open Mat and this will be mentioned on the booking calendar). Please also ensure all clothing and gear is clean and in good condition to maintain a safe training environment.
How can I review my Open Mat performance?
After each session, video footage of your sparring is available in the app, allowing you to analyze your performance and identify areas for improvement.
How does the Video Footage feature work?
Your match history and video footage of your sparring rounds are automatically uploaded to your account on the Komba app. You can login and view your footage at any time.

Remember if you don’t input your match result within 48 hours you risk being marked as an automatic loss or whatever your sparring partner listed as the outcome.
What happens if I don’t report a match outcome?
If neither participant reports the outcome within 48 hours, the match will automatically be recorded as a tie. Persistent failure to report can result in penalties. If one party reports the outcome and the other doesn't, we will solely rely on the party that reported the outcome.
